Sam Tom Calling!
Hello to everyone in the jolly world of Livejournal. Although I have never been one for keeping diaries, I have decided to join as other people seem to enjoy it, and it looks like a good way to document events of note and talk to people with similar interests.
It was my birthday on the 18th and I had a nice time. Unfortunately I couldn't get enough time off work to go to Devon and be with my mother, but
spam_robot77 and my flatmate
gemima_obrien helped me to enjoy myself. In the afternoon, we went to a most delightful Chinese shop in Soho, which boasts a vast array of ornamental creatures, fans, slippers, calendars and so on. We had only discovered this shop by chance earlier that week, when we got a bit lost on our way to Ghetto.
It was from this shop that my birthday present came - a Japanese lucky cat, holding one paw up in the traditional style. The beast is battery-powered and moves its paw back and forth, bestowing good fortune on the deserving. He is gold and green with a red collar and has a lovely, clement face. He comes complete with a set of labels. You have to cut one out and place it beneath him, and he will grant you what it says on the label. They are mostly in Chinese, though, so I don't understand what they say.
The spam robot bought me a pair of charming little cats, one purple ceramic and one yellow glass. I am pleased :D
Then we went on to Selfridges, to look at an exhibit on the lower ground floor - a miniature city made entirely of biscuits! It was impressive and I intend to provide photos soon.
When we got home, Gemma served up a wonderful cake in the shape of a hedgehog! It had a face made of fudge and spikes made of chocolate fingers. I was thrilled.
We ate cake until it was time to go to a club night called Family at Bar Music Hall in Shoreditch. This event turned out to be a disappointment, however, as by the time we arrived - only about 10.30 - we were informed that the club was already so full that no-one would be admitted unless they were on the guest list. We wandered around Shoreditch until we found a pub that was not too crowded, had a drink and then went home. I feel that the area has become a victim of its own success - at the weekend it feels overcrowded, and the celebrated Shoreditch Twats seem to have been largely driven out by a more mainstream crowd.
Overall, though, I had a pleasant day. My 26th year is a special anniversary year - 10 years of me being a New Romantic! My 16th birthday present was a Visage compilation, which opened the door to a shimmering world of synth-pop delight.
