I'm enjoying my stay in Devon. My twin [livejournal.com profile] joysilence has been here too for the past week, although today she went back to her flat in Bristol. I enjoyed playing internet games with her broadband, cuddling her plushie dugong Lord Greystoke and reading her excellent book about owls. Walking through the Clifton area, we saw a large fox sitting in a deserted, overgrown yard. When he stopped washing himself, he turned around to look at us, entirely undisturbed by our proximity.

I wish I lived closer to Mrs Lyle. Sadly there are not many job vacancies for Media Ponces in the Westcountry, and I was keen to go to some good clubs before I died, which is why I moved to London. I certainly had some fun nites out before almost all the good clubs and bands in London folded or just ceased to be entertaining. At least I tried. I think I'd feel frustrated if I'd never gone to London.

The other day Joy and I visited a cemetery very near our house. The church is visible from the road but I never realised that a huge, verdant and extremely restful graveyard stretched out behind it. I found it very pleasant to walk across the grass as a light rain fell, admiring the different engravings. Joy and I have always liked graveyards and used to play in the delightful little churchyard near our former home when we were children. I find them peaceful rather than sinister. There is a special plot in the Exeter graveyard set aside for German soldiers who died on our soil in World War Two. The gravestones are simple and very well maintained, and look as good as new. Nearby are the graves of the British war dead, with the emblems of their different regiments engraved on the headstones.

Joy and I have also had some shopping trips in Exeter and Topsham, traditionally a fishing village, now largely given over to antique and rather good charity shops. In Exeter town centre, we witnessed a gathering of musicians playing pan pipe music, amplified to an uncomfortable volume, while wearing large, fake American mammal heads as hats. Owly Joy sighed and muttered that Exeter was the only town in the land where such a display would only be tolerated. Its residents tend to be quite laid back and like "ethnic" artifacts. I don't have a problem with busking, but I don't think the music should be amplified to such an extent, especially not in front of Boots on a weekday afternoon.

Still, we got away from the High Street and went to a lovely quiet park called Rougemont Gardens, to eat our burgers, "fries" and Coca Cola. There was no-one there except some students on benches and rather stern-looking statues. I like sitting outside on a bright, mild autumn day, when the sun has lost its summer harshness.

I later visited a second-hand tat shop called Kitsch-U-Like, and bought a Girl Annual from 1985. It features a photo story called Computer Games, about a girl who tries to get into computers to impress a boy. The real stars are the 80's machines themselves, and the cool 80's hairstyles and big jumpers.
