It was my birthday yesterday and I was pleased to be visited by [livejournal.com profile] vieannelyle and her boyfriend Bart for the weekend. I was given some chocolates and Lush bath products, as well as lovely cards, one showing a panda with its baby, and one with oriental flowers. [livejournal.com profile] spam_robot77 made a nice asparagus risotto and bought a chocolate cake.

Vieanne and Bart were very helpful and did a lot of DIY jobs on my new flat, including installing a washing machine, hanging doors, assembling my new bed etc etc. They are both very handy - Mrs Lyle was able to change a plug by the time she was five, and Bart's dad made him help with friends' DIY projects as a boy.

On Saturday night we went to see Hot Fuzz, the new comedy police film by the team who did Shaun Of The Dead. It had a lot in common with the latter, with some sad moments as well as laughs, and lots of film references. It was especially funny and accurate in its depiction of Westcountry village life, with their fetes, floral obsessions and ongoing struggle against hippy street entertainers.

My head is gradually recovering after having some cysts removed last Thursday. The operation, at a GP's in Muswell Hill where they played the same episode of Pingu on a loop in the empty waiting room, went fine. I only needed a local anaesthetic. I've got to have the stitches out on Friday though, not really looking forward to that! My late father, Mr Lyle, would carry out minor procedures like this himself at home, but I don't feel competent enough.
