I saw an article on the Guardian website the other day on the Blitz Kids which may be of interest to some of you. It has the merit of considering the grim social and political situation of the time, which a lot of accounts of the time don't seem to bother with.

I saw District 9 the other day and was very impressed. It's been a long time since I've been to the cinema and liked a film so much. I knew nothing about the film other than that it was sci-fi of some sort, and several people I know recommended it. It definitely belongs in the dystopian sci-fi category (my favourite), and had more Cronenberg-type body horror than I had expected. I had to look away at times. It doesn't rely on gore or CGI to make its point though, in fact the most upsetting elements of the film involve human cruelty.

The film is shot in TV documentary style and there are many comical moments at the start. This makes the lurch into horror, which begins when a civil servant collapses into his birthday cake after being infected by the alien refugees he bosses about all day, all the more unsettling. The aliens themselves aren't really frightening, in fact they are quite likeable, squabbling over cat food tins and combing through rubbish dumps for computer components.

I have finally managed to arrange a visit from another handyman to come and have a look at my leaking bathroom in Tottenham on Tuesday. I called the one recommended by Martin several times but he never got back to me, so after 2 weeks of trying I found another company who have been recommended by an independent website. My tenant would rather I waited till she's left for the work to begin if it's going to take over 1 week, so I don't know if anything will actually get done any time soon.

I'm off to Brave Exhibitions tonight, a night at Catch in Hoxton where they play electro and various obscure goth/industrial sub-genres. Catch is a weird venue, long and narrow, but last time I went I had quite a good time. Princess Julia is DJing and I like a nice midweek excursion - and feel I deserve one after getting up with the partridge to translate a lengthy European Commisson service provider's contract!

I now have a Last Fm account, find me here if you want to rifle through the stuff that gets me through translations about bar furnishings and the like. I cannot recommend Parallels too highly, they are my favourite new band in fact. 'Reservoir' is an especially beautiful wistful electro-pop number. I have also put a couple of rough demo tracks from A Terrible Splendour on there (and also on Myspace here). The recording quality is obviously quite bedroomish but the main point of putting the songs up is to try and get another synth player and maybe a guitarist. Please "cascade" the information to relevant parties, as they used to say at Red Bee.
