Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] spam_robot77, her friend Chris and I went to Deviant at Metro. We went there to see a couple of friends’ bands, but it turned out Lene Lovich was performing too! She looked and sounded pretty much the same as she did in her 80’s heyday. Her voice is still good, in an alarming, German Kate Bush sort of way.

We also met Paul Reynolds from A Flock Of Seagulls! He was the one who played guitar and had big glasses. A mate of mine knows him was showing him the sights of nocturnal London. He turned out to be a very nice chap. I told him I thought the verse to The Modern’s Industry (which the DJ actually played later that night) sounded just like the chorus to The More You Live… by the Flock. He agreed!

Unfortunately, Sarah’s evening was rounded off by someone mistakenly walking off with her coat, which she had left in a corner! But overall, we had a good time.

Today I subtitled the Nottingham local news. One of the stories was about a former mayor complaining about how too many rubber bands are being dropped by postmen onto the city’s streets. The final story was nice though, about attempts to breed a rare fish called a burbot and reintroduce it into the nation’s rivers. They have brought some in specially from Denmark! I love the way fish look, and I found Herbert the burbot very sweet. Burbots are large, elongated, grey and spiky. They look quite scowly, too. I always find scowling animals endearing.

Never mind, if they played it once at Deviant, they will probably play it again some time. I had a nice prance to it, although Sarah preferred to use the opportunity to go to the bar at that point ;)

postmen and rubber bands

When I go to Bristol to see JJ I often remark red rubber bands on the ground outside her door. What you say, M, confirms my suspicions that postmen are to blame. I have been known to pick them up (bands, not postmen) and put them in a drawer in case they come in handy sometime.

Yes, wise tea-hen. Indeed, the report did feature a lady who collected them and used them for hobbycrafts. She displayed the ball she had made of them. Nice to see you using the stern hen icon.

Actually, there were quite a few people this time! A lot of people left when Lene Lovich had finished, but then a bit later, a whole new bunch of people came along. The DJing was good indeed, although most people didn't get dancing until quite near the end.
